Meycauayan Works

Location

Ciudad Industria, Barrio Bahay Pari Meycauayan City Bulacan, Region 3 (Central Luzon)

Background

The Meycauayan Works of SteelAsia houses two rolling mill lines which the company calls M1 and M2.

M1 is a Philippine steel industry pioneer and is the heart of the Meycauayan Works.  Commissioned in 1996, it was the country’s first modern rolling mill.   It featured many pioneering technologies such as 12-meter billet capability, walking-hearth furnace, in-line rolling train configuration, independent drives, Level-2 automation, quick size change and more new advances that allowed the Philippine steel industry to leapfrog into the modern era of efficiency, productivity, conservation and operational health and safety.  The mill was given tax incentives by the Philippine Board of Investments as a Pioneer investment, due to these new technologies. The mill has been a multiple and Hall of Fame Awardee of the Department of Energy for energy conservation.

M1 is also the first rebar rolling mill in the Philippines to have the following certifications; ISO 9001 (Quality Management System), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management System), OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management) and UK CARES (British Standard).

Until 2014, when SteelAsia’s Davao Works was commissioned it was the Philippines largest rolling mill with a capacity of 450,000 tons per year.

The most significant fact about M1 is that it changed the Philippine steel industry.  The capabilities of the mill raised the benchmarks of reliable service, quality and low cost.  The mill put the consumer first and emphasized customer satisfaction and added value.  The mill allowed the business of rebar to become de-commoditized and more of a service differentiated industry. M2 is a 100,000 tpy cross-country rolling mill commissioned in 1988.

Davao Works

Location

Purok 17 Bunawan District, Davao City Region 11 (Davao Region, Mindanao)

Background

The Davao Works is home to the Philippines’ largest and most modern steel mill.  We call it M5, and it commissioned in 2014 as one of two mills in the Mindano region (the other being SteelAsia’s M6 in Misamis Oriental).

The mill is state-of-the-art and among the most modern in the world.  It features the latest technologies for productivity, energy conservation, environmental impacts and operational health and safety.  It is an Italian design and supplied mill.  The mill is the first Philippine mill to be able to process 150mm x 150mm billets, a more economical spec and a world standard today.  M5 is the first Philippine mill to use AC motors, which are power efficient, low noise and maintenance equipment.  The mill also features a twin tungsten carbide monoblock that can produce PNS 211 7mm and 8mm bars.  M5 is also the first Philippine mill to have rotating drum technology.

The environmental features of M5 stand out.  For instance, M5 which consumes 150,000 cu.m. of water, sources the vast quantity exclusivelt from rainwater collected from the Work’s roofing and road system and stored in a reservoir.  There is zero effluent draining into the environment as 100% of wastewater is recycled and treated and re-used in operations.  There is zero seepage of oil into the ground.  The lubrication of machinery is through a closed system that combines air and oil and is distributed through hydraulics.  Like SteelAsia’s other mills the automation and other technologies also ensure energy conservation and lowest possible particulate emission.

When SteelAsia started up M5 operations Davao buyers saw rebar costs reduced by over PhP 1,500 (USD 35) per ton.  Davao consumers and distributors no longer needed to ‘import’ rebar from Manila, as the region had its own rebar mill which could be accessed for picked-up orders 24 hours a day, 7 days week.  Besides the lower rebar cost, the impact was also immediately felt by the regions business community as mill created economic activity for logistics, operations supply and jobs and port activity.
