The Real Deal In Steel: More students visiting SteelAsia plants
More and more students are learning what it’s really like inside a steel mill.
SteelAsia’s loose collaboration with the academe showed a marked increase in activity in 2015, shares Corporate Development Officer Joel Jayme. One focus of the company’s CSR initiative of organizing plant tours and presenations is to expose students to the steel manufacturing processes, technologies and relevance of the industry to society. Jayme noted a marked increase of 38% in student participants from 2116 student participants in 2014, to 2,925 student participants in 2015. The jump in visitors was noted in four of SteelAsia’s five plant sites: Meycauayan Works (Bulacan); Calaca Works (Batangas); Carcar Works (Cebu); and Davao Works (Davao City). It was also noted that participating schools were not limited to those within the locale of the plant but also came from farther regions and islands not known for heavy industry. For the year 2016 up to March 31 a total of 2,966 students, representing 36 schools have scheduled visits to SteelAsia plants. This 3-month total of 2016 already surpasses the entire 2015.
