SteelAsia a finalist in the 2016 Global Metals Awards
SteelAsia marks a first in the history of the Philippines’ steel industry as it becomes a finalist in two categories (Industry Leadership in Steel and CEO of the Year) in the 2016 Global Metals Awards of Platts - McGraw Hill Financial.
SteelAsia President and CEO Mr Benjamin O. Yao says being nominated is more than good enough, given that the Global Metals Awards of Platts is considered the Oscars of the metals industry. “We are happy to put the Philippines and our local steel industry in the spotlight and be ranked alongside the bigwigs from all over the world.”
Being a finalist in a global awards is a significant for the Philippine steel industry (it has long been lamented here that the Philippines has an under-developed steel industry, if any at all). “The acknowledgment of a Philippine steel company is an indicator of how far we have come in terms of steel manufacturing and how prepared we are to support and meet the challenges of growth and development,” Yao shares.
The Industry Leadership award is given to a company that stands out in taking decisive action to create substantial transformation or change of direction in the steel sector. It recognizes a company that has shown that it is a first mover, venturing away from status-quo and willing to take risks with the courage and conviction to make fundamental changes in the way it operates. SteelAsia is up against other major players from around the world, incluidng ArcelorMittal (Luxembourg), Egyptian Steel, JSW Steel Ltd. (India), NLMK Group (Russia), and Nucor Corp (USA).
Yao is a finalist in the CEO of the Year category. The award is given to a CEO who has most consistently demonstrated clarity of vision, judgment and motivational skills. This award recognizes decisive action when confronted with challenges and a brand of leadership that enables a company to adapt to market shifts by balancing long-term growth with short term volatility. Among Yao’s fellow-contenders for this distinction are the chief executives of Egyptian Steel and JSW Steel Ltd.
On 14 March 2016, Platts revealed the finalists in 14 categories on their website. The finalists were chosen from a pool of over 100 nominations. The winners will be determined by an independent panel of international experts, whose background and experience span regulation, corporate leadership, trading and technology. The winners will be announced at a black-tie gala on 19 May 2016 at the Marriott Grosvenor Square in London.
