PUBLIC WARNING ON

SUB-STANDARD STEEL BARS

This is to warn the public of the proliferation of substandard steel bars being sold in the market. It can be recalled that in 2013, after the deadly earthquake in the provinces of Cebu and Bohol and Typhoon Yolanda in the Visayas region, destroyed structures were found using substandard steel bars.  These substandard products could not have found its way into the market if they passed the regulatory sampling and testing procedures prescribed in the mandatory Philippine National Standard (PNS). This was affirmed in the Stakeholders Meeting convened by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) last July 12, 2016 for Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) and Philippines Quality & Safety Mark (PS) of the following PNS:

  1. PNS 49:2002 – Steel bars for Concrete Reinforcement
  • Sampling and testing of one (1) sample every twenty (20) metric tons per diameter per grade
  1. PNS 211:2002 – Re-rolled Steel bars for Concrete Reinforcement
  • Sampling and testing of one (1) sample every twenty (20) metric tons per diameter per grade
  1. PNS 657:2008 – Hot-rolled Equal leg Steel Angle bars
  • Sampling and testing of one (1) sample every fifty (50) metric tons per type, per size, per thickness

The sampling and testing of steel bars (locally manufactured or imported) by PS and ICC license holders must be done in the Philippines to ensure that no substandard steel bars are sold to the consumers.

We urge the buying public to report to DTI and/or PISI any substandard steel they find being sold in the market through the following:
