SteelAsia cited by DOE for energy efficiency
Its sustained energy conservation initiatives has won for SteelAsia Manufacturing Corporation (SteelAsia) two awards at the Department of Energy’s 35th Don Emilio Abello Energy Efficiency Awards (DEAEEA).
SteelAsia’s Davao Works received the Outstanding Award while a Special Award was given to its Meycauayan Works. Davao Works’s electrical supervisor, Leeman Aguirre, earned an Outstanding Energy Manager Award, too.
The 5.0% production energy savings of Davao Works translated to nearly P250 million saved and 13 million kilograms of avoided carbon dioxide. Meycauayan Works saved over 200,000 LOE (liters of oil equivalent) or 1.0% percent production energy conservation from 2015 to 2016.
At the 25th DEAEEA in 2007, Meycauayan Works earned its first Hall of Fame citation after winning Outstanding Award for three consecutive years (2005 to 2007), recording a total of over 600,000 LOE.
SteelAsia reduces its carbon footprint emissions while trimming production costs by investing in the latest and energy efficient technologies. For instance, Davao Works uses High Speed Steel and Composite Rolls (Carbide Roll) in its rolling mill. It also revised its Cooling Arc Design and installed an IBL Shear.
The Energy Department recognizes the private sectors’ efforts in promoting and implementing energy conservation programs through its annual DEAEEA. At the Awards Ceremony, Energy Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi said over one million megawatt-hours of electricity or P9.7 billion has been saved or an equivalent of 512 million kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions amid the collective energy efficiency measures of these businesses and individuals.
This year’s DEAEEA had eight categories: Special Recognition Award, Secretary’s Award, Hall of Fame Award, Outstanding Award and Outstanding Energy Manager Award, Citation Award, Special Award, ASEAN Energy Award, and, Government Energy Management Program (GEMP) Award.Over 170 companies and individuals were given their respective awards during the 35th DEAEEA.
