The Sofitel Philippine Plaza, Manila was the venue of the 2015 South East Asia Iron and Steel Institute (SEAISI) Conference and Exhibition. Attended by over 400 delegates representing 31 countries, the event was hosted by the Philippine Iron and Steel Institute (PISI), the country’s umbrella organization for its steel industry.
SteelAsia’s VP for Industry Affairs, Roberto M. Cola is on his 5th year as the PISI President and is also concurrently the Chairman of SEAISI.
The conference sessions included a CEO panel discussion on Creating and Delivering Value in the ASEAN Steel Industry. A clear message was delivered: ASEAN steel companies should focus on being customer centric and not obsess over building more steelmaking (blast furnace and electric arc furnace), especially in the context of Chinese oversupply.
SteelAsia played host on the final day with a tour of its Meycauayan Works plant. Aside from the technologies that allow the company to be flexible enough for JIT delivery, SteelAsia presented other customer centric innovations that de-commoditize rebar, and provide better value in a globally competitive arena. These included downstream cut and bend technology, sustainable and inclusive practices, and cost-saving logistic solutions. Top steel equipment and technology supplier Danieli of Italy also made a presentation of the cutting edge value-adding technologies it would be using in SteelAsia’s two upcoming mills, the 1.2 million ton per year rebar line in Bulacan, Central Luzon and the 800 thousand ton per year rebar line in Cebu. SteelAsia also announced to the delegates that it was planning a third new mill, a 500,000 ton per year rebar line in Southern Luzon, targeted to be operational in 2018.
Taking off from the country report sessions earlier in the conference, SEAISI Secretary General Tan Ah Yong congratulated SteelAsia as the only steel company in the ASEAN region expanding in a big way. The Philippine economy has gained momentum spurring construction and demand for rebar in backlogged sectors such as infrastructure, housing, power, tourism and BPO office space.
Earlier, SteelAsia also sponsored the Welcome Dinner for the delegates, an event that featured cultural performances courtesy of the Department of Tourism.
