First time steel export for Mindanao with SteelAsia’s rebar shipment to Canada

Through its Davao mill, SteelAsia Manufacturing Corporation shipped 14,200 metric tons of high-strength steel bars worth USD 8.8 million (Php 511.24 million) to Canada on October 2024. This is the first time the company’s 600-thousand-ton-per-year Davao mill—or for any steel mill in Mindanao—to export steel products.

Last October 2024, through its Davao mill, SteelAsia Manufacturing Corporation shipped 14,200 metric tons of high-strength steel bars worth USD 8.8 million (Php 511.24 million) to Canada. The latest shipment is the seventh export of rebars for Canadian infrastructure projects, but the first from SteelAsia’s recently customer-accredited Davao mill.

The previous six shipments came from SteelAsia’s mill in Batangas, totalled more than 41,400 metric tons of rebar worth USD 27.32 million (Php 1.58 billion). The latest shipment props up the overall delivery to Canada to more than 55,600 metric tons of steel worth USD 36.12 million (Php 2.1 billion) in total.

In addition, the succeeding rebar shipments from SteelAsia’s Davao Works is expected to surpass what the company’s Calaca mill has already delivered, with an additional order for over 30 thousand metric tons with an estimated value of around Php 1.2 billion.

SteelAsia Chairman and CEO Benjamin Yao said that local steel products breaking into First World markets such as Canada is a huge milestone for the Philippine steel industry.

“This is proof that Philippine steel industry can meet the highest quality and performance standards in the world. Our investment in cutting edge steelmaking technology not only makes this possible, but it also paves way to grow at last a mother industry for the country’s manufacturing sector,” Yao said.

This is the first time the company’s Davao mill, a 600 thousand ton per year mill—or for any steel mill in Mindanao—to export steel products.

SteelAsia’s Davao Works is one of its five rebar mills, the combined total of which is one of thee among the largest rebar manufacturers in Southeast Asia.

SteelAsia inaugurated its latest mill in Compostella Cebu last July with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. gracing the event, who noted that “over 70% of all infrastructure, housing, power, industrial, and other office developments in the country use SteelAsia rebar”, and that “it signifies the company’s indispensable role in our socio-economic transformation.” #
