SteelAsia Manufacturing Corp., the country’s flagship steel manufacturer, is building a P30-billion plant in Candelaria, Quezon to produce heavy structural steel products that are currently 100% imported.

The plant will commence commercial operation by 2027, and will benefit the country with a 1.2 billion of dollar savings annually .

The company awarded early this week the EPCM (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Management) for the plant to MCC Huatian Engineering & Technology Co., Ltd., a global leader in this kind of project.

This  heavy sections plant will use the latest European steel technology to produce over one million tons of structural steel such as H beams, I beams, angles, channels, sheet piles, plates and other heavy profiles.

“We will create around 7,000 jobs instead of giving jobs to China, Vietnam, Thailand, Korea and Japan, our major suppliers. Our carbon footprint will also be 90 percent lower than the traditional steelmaking process because we use recycled scrap metal and employ electric arc furnace technology", said Ben Yao, chairman and CEO of SteelAsia.

Yao has been on a mission to build the country’s first integrated steel industry and put the country at par with its neighbors.

"We are building the steel industry. Except for rebar, 90% of steel has to be imported because we don't have steel plants to make this product.", he said.

Delivery lead times to projects will also improve from 3-4 months for imports to 1-2 weeks once the Candelaria plant is on stream.

“This is a game changer initially for the construction and infrastructure sector since this means quicker project completion and lower costs”, Yao said.

MCC Huatian is the global leader and most experienced engineering company in building steel plants. It has built over 230 steel plants with a total installed capacity of over 200 million tons in 14 countries.

“In steel manufacturing, we cannot compromise on technology and know-how because we are committed to producing the best steel products." Yao said.
